Devonport Sunshine

Sights of Devonport
Glinting waves
curling around
into bays
washing into harbour walls.

Sounds of Devonport
The brother running footsteps
from arcade mall mouth
Chased by calling sister
Child in arms starts singing
a song of life
Hundreds of children calls
From seaside playground
far enough away to reduce
to leaking balloons of fun and adventure
Two friends on coffee expedition
friendship conversation bubble
Punctuated by seagulls
indignant squawks
Car engines purring
Traffic voices
Welcomes called by shop owners
And a thousand unheard voices of history.

Starting Thoughts:
A wonderful sunny day in Wellington, New Zealand. At the port, shopping in Devonport. Decided to capture some sights and sounds.

A poem on the ambiance of Devonport in Wellington, New Zealand

In Charge of the World

If I were in charge of the world
fitness would be eating ice cream
guns would melt away
and global warming would be global just right.

If I were in charge of the world
old age would mean thirty year old bodies
young age would have more common sense
and middle age would eat more ice cream.

If I were in charge of the world
politicians would turn green if they lie
everyone would stop to enjoy beautiful moments
and digital devices would stop when overused.

If I were in charge of the world
Almond chocolate would be a fruit
A hug would last for twenty seconds
And a person who sometimes left the toilet seat up
Who liked to bike and spend time with his grandson
Who sometimes buys too many gadgets
Would still be in charge of the world.

Starting Thoughts: How would us being in charge of the world make it a different and better place? Can you place some humour into this form of poetry as well? What will make your version of this poem unique?

In Charge of the World Poetry writing for children

Christmas Contrasts

Snow falls
Cold creeping
Enveloping coats, boots, woolly hats
Inside gathering Christmas
Shut darkened windows
Hot turkey, ham feasts
Heart warming eggnog
Decorated evergreen, colourful gifts
Glitter tinsel, flashing bulbs
Starry winter crisp nights
Family, close friends
Celebrate Northern Christmas
Sunshine beach balls
Heat seared beaches
Sunscreen Skin, jandals, board shorts
Outside expanding Christmas
Open light soaked doors
BBQ sizzles, chilled salad
Throat quenching cold water
Decorated evergreen, colourful gifts
Glitter tinsel, flashing bulbs
Starry summer balmy nights
Family, close friends
Celebrate Southern Christmas

Salty Children

Salty Children are classroom spice
important flavour in our life,
Salty Children turn white when shaken,
and enjoy sizzling bacon,
Salty Children like small spaces
but grind their teeth with angry faces,
Salty Children love melting snow
dancing in drifts makes them glow,
They love sunbathing on hot beaches
leaving white outlines
where their body leaches,
Salty Children are often
misunderstood
when people expect
sugar sweet good,
Adding weight is not
their thing
Zest and zing
is what they bring.
WALT: to write a strong poem in the style of the "mismatched poetry" form and demonstrating command of some literary devices.

Success criteria:
  • To choose a mismatched noun paired with an adjective or verb.
  • Able to deliberately use and describe two literary devices within my poem.
  • Create a list of mismatched phrases and choose the best 6-8
  • Able to craft the phrases together and break lines in well thought out places,
  • Be able to publish the poem with illustrations that follow creative commons zero guidelines.

I used the literacy devices of metaphors, alliteration, repetition and finished with simple rhyme to emphasise my final point.
