Depression Decay

A slow sink
Descending decay
down into depression
How can it be
just when things
were up?
Life seemed
to be expanding
Now contracting
dark holes
inner bleakness
trapped will.

In the midst of the party
I leave the sound and noise
of human companionship,
Seek space
hiding in the toilet
waiting for receding
walls to wash
out the fear
still the chaos.

The mirror mocks

Can God find me?

Starting Thoughts:
Sometimes the noise, the people seem too much and we want to just retreat back into the walls. In the toilet area the mirrors mean we cannot escape our own reflection, the reality of facing ourselves.

your foundations
crumbling direction
clouding vision
breaking tainting staining
even the best of who you are
The Loudest voices
embed claws of influence
dragging tears of
connecting dark echoes
into your soul.

Throw off the confusion
Cut the cords of chaos
the untruth,
Focus the blade on
removing distractions
carve out the dissonance,
infuse instead harmonies
of love
healing division
building the kingdom
on the Rock

In a weary world
In the pressure
In the worries
In the moment
What emerges from our heart
What erupts?
What seeps?
Do we even see it?
Do we surprise ourselves…
Others?
The heat in our eyes
The hate in our voices
The sarcasm in our sentences
The destruction in our gossip
Have we left true life
by striving for entitlement?

Step by step
Climb the hill
Approach the cross
Kneel before
experience the resurrection love
be the cross
nail the right to be right

Starting Thoughts:
Relationships change over time, sometimes the changes are fast and become toxic. Covid and the blowtorch on the political and social thinking that it bought surprised people as friendships they had changed markedly. How should we really be the church of God, the kingdom of God in these times of stress?

I believe loudly

gossip loudly
behave strongly
react strongly
If first I
become more of the noise
become more protest
become more social media
more arguments
more righteous anger
more fear
more hate
but live without love
stand up without love
listen without love,
I live for nothing,
Without love
I won’t be known,
not be truly free
not be truly me
I won’t be Known
as one who walks
like Christ
with the love of Christ
connecting me
with a cord
that can’t be broken
to others who
in their differences
variety
thinking
are also God’s kingdom
here on Earth.

Look at Christ
See Jesus
the Saviour’s eyes,
live in His love,
be His love,
for by our love
love in action and truth
we will be known.

of your criticism crisis

of love’s gratefulness

Why is the power
important?
Why do you feel
impotent?
Why do you
need so much to win?
Why has my life
let you down?
Why do the praises
I hear resound hollow?

Let me take your
minds and broken hearts

I am big enough
to take it all,
Let my goodness

We thought we knew
our world
our life
our futures
Then airports shut
distance became
distance again
homes became
prisons and playpens
businesses shuttered
and viruses spread
in bodies and minds,
Uncertain times
with blindness of future,
reverberating noise
Fear atmospheres
and shadows shaking
thoughts and reactions,
Fight and flight
collapsing logic
strangling
the way I used to think
shuttering my humanity
closing my care,
creeping chaos,
manipulative media,
arguments and acid anxiety.

What will I choose
these echoes of
disintegration and violence
severing relationships
dividing hearts,
Or through me
Allow others to see
our God’s gentleness
our God’s kingdom
our God’s love?

Will I let go
think on, meditate on
have eyes for
Jesus,
See God
Give God the fear
the struggles
and choose life
choose grace
choose restoration
choose God’s peace
and give the peace of God?

It started with a nickname
a random label
assigned in a moment
replicated repeated strikes
of laughter spikes
suffocations from voiceless friends
word knives carving my skin
silence from a universal background,
Every new person
who joined the class
repeated the fear
created more tears
collapsed the hope that
someone would be different
someone would be brave
someone would bring change
someone would stand up,
every day increased
the isolation
and the closing in
of the surrounding pack
hyenas on the prowl,
The hurt is me.

The bully is me
The bystander is me
The silence is me
Everybody is me.

A hole in each of us
opening our essence
Challenging us to more.

So we run
Or sleep
or pretend fulfilled life,
we blunt
Bludgeon the hunger
Bit by bit
whacking the mole
filling the hole
With faking scraps
Spending our soul
labouring on never satisfaction
Seeking
Distraction and dissatisfaction
a swallowing snake
of small shallow things
consuming
joy and freedom.

So ask…
for the hunger
for the stirring
for new moments
for more,
Pursue God,
Seek hungry friends
Awaken hunger in others
Awaken the sleepers
Who are just waiting
for your words,
for your actions.

But first -
Ask
Seek
Desire
Hunger!

Concrete subway entrance
white tiles scattering light
daily journey to known destinations
daily journeys of choice chance,
I rush down the steps
Hitting the base platform
Fight through stainless steel turnstile
Hopefully looking towards
black edged sliding doors
of the crowded train ready -
about to leave,
it seems that time has
collapsed to this moment
Slower yet faster
Frozen yet blurred
Will I make the ride?
Will I step through the sliding doors?
Will I make today’s future?

How will my life change
if I make it?
if I don't?

Why do I try so hard
Or other times just let it all go
Why do I play
you’re not the boss
of me,
I will do it my way
I will say one thing, do another
Be Whatever...

so I pay the price
building my own barred prison
digging my deepening grave
Living to be a lord
of self
creating empty spinning destiny
Fear and Lies
spinning into dark illusions
all dramatic drama
Trying to control my life
Trying to control others.

But Life is threaded
with this paradox struggle,
an alternative reality,
Wherever we are yielded
surrendered to God
accepting His sacrificial love
Wherever we love God
Wherever Jesus has been given control
Wherever we remember our identity
We are
lifted from darkness
to become kings and priests,
Wherever his lordship reigns
in our lives
the kingdom within expands
revealing to the world
a forever dominion
destroying devil works
in God’s authority,
Through bowing to
the Lord of our life
to the Kingdom of now and not yet
to the kingdom of God -
a resurrected Jesus
   Reverses the curse
   Cleanses our sin
   Releases freedom
   Changes our lives.

So I hear...
Choose the kingdom
that will not be shaken
Open - unlock areas of
my life to God,
claim the promises,
give my life Centre
to the loving, intimate,
forgiving, holy, powerful,  living Lord,
Receive the everlasting King
Step into authority
Step into who I am.

This is my king!

Wholeness came
through the hole in time
the pivoting point in time
collisions of past, present and future
and the King who became human,
began thirty years
journey on Earth.

God:
Passion sending purpose
Love leading to suffering
sending the light
revealing the blood cost
knowing the loneliness of pain
bringing life out of hell
singing life out of death.

Servant:
on a donkey
destiny hidden in simplicity
deliverance hidden in sacrifice,
surrender freeing salvation
to all people through
the King of miracles
the King of creation,
Palms laid, palms raised
A carpet of Praises
a crowd of worship
recognising the Saviour,
The eternal work of God
made flesh
made to ride
made for betrayal
made for the joy
made for the passion
made to die
to change
everything.

Self:
In the crowd
we stand
praise or playing,
Living lives of
possibilities, potential
pain, power, passion.

In the crowd
we can survive, hide,
Or decide.

Confusion and curiosity questions
Seeking answers because
we do not know,
genuine searching,

Or questions asked
seeking answers we desire,
In the space between answers given
and broken expectations
these questions are often dropped,
avoiding unwanted answers
avoiding uncomfortable truths.

Other questions
fall into emptiness
spoken into void
a black hole of non-return
disappearing into
vastness of life and space
creating a smallness paradox
that travels the mind
in endless unanswered patterns,
spirals where silence echoes silence,
leaving the questions
hanging in the silence...

Like Jesus.

My God, my God, why have you
deserted me?
Why are you so far away?
Won't you listen to my groans
and come to my rescue?
I cry out day and night,
but you don't answer,
and I can never rest.

Because of this silence
because of seeming absence
We have this reality -
Jesus has been there
we have this promise -
Jesus is here with us.

Starting Thoughts: Questions are amazing doors that can open us to the world around us. We can also use them as weapons to blunt truth or reveal truth. Sometimes there seems to be no answers to our most painful questions.
