Breaking Waters

Mist waters grey the horizon,
Sullen sea white caps
wash thrusting pier,
dark encrusted woods
wounding the ocean’s belly.

Above
the foam-lashed poles
stands a black-coated
figure at Land's End,
A lone woman
in a dark gown
spray-laced air,
the cold
snatching her dress.

Heaviness stalks the atmosphere,
her forfeited heart
tear blurred eyes
stare unseeing
within annoyed sea

Hurt showed
in her silhouette
I called out,
she turned
and I saw black
in the eyes,
personality in retreat
and the sea stilled.

I blinked once
like forgotten care…
she was gone,
an empty space,
questions
about another
life lost.
Breaking Waters Suicide Poem

Litter Life

Birth,
Milling papers
frowning
sharing puddles
skipping
across road
jostling
in refuse bin,
wrapping
football crowd legs,
Some dirt travelled
others new to game
learning to resist wind
clinging to
buildings
gnarled trees
posts,
Human kindness
has bourne this litter.

Yawn

A day behind
this time of now
tired from work
I stretch out
eyes vacant
heavy with tarmac,
I yawn
and sprain my jaw.

Starting Thoughts:
Just a fun thought as I yawned.

25th

Blue green bay mirrored
to your eyes
seeing in them
Sounds of our past
from "yes"to "I do"
times of passion
dreams together
laughter and stress
worship and mess

Lady in Red
breeze
in beauty

I love
the way we know
each other
the guessed thoughts
the respect for each
others talents

I love
sharing time
holding hands
on sandy beaches
seated in chairs
on river banks
reading in baches
then and now
living vows.

Starting Thoughts: Celebrating a life with of 25 years marriage with my beautiful wife. Love spending time with her.

Watcher

I am a watcher of God,
Not for Him,
I stand sometimes on
the edge,
hovering
anticipating,
waiting - sort of
for divine intervention,
but not asking for it,
Feeling like I'm a target
yet somehow I am missing,
As a watcher I
see the power
the revelation,
I see the new
I see the love,
But I'm just a bystander,
Partial witness
aware but not here.

Falling Apart

Almost an empty street
end of day dark
creeping across sky,
couldn’t wait to get home,
"I’m tired,"
I had just thought
when a stranger
or was it life
walked straight into me
and I fell
apart
separated bones
and sinews
disjointed body
rolling, scattered
by gravity forces
across grass verge
bouncing into gutter
but in law-abiding attention
to road rules for
some macabre reason,
nothing bounced
onto the road.
The collapse skittered
to a piecemeal stop
but when I tried to
get up
I couldn’t find one leg.

So I just lay
in pieces,
grinning from the pavement
enjoying
the spaced out feeling.

Marriage Dance

We rejoice and delight with you
your unity and affection
enjoying and praising your love
with this time of
eating, drinking, dancing,
laughing and sharing.

Our thoughts are in the songs
gentle unspoken words
kindred conversations,
quiet prayers.
Moments of ceremony and celebration.

We’ve given you to each other
to the fragrance
of a journey
sought after
but found by few,
a love founded deep
in the friendship
and mysteries of Christ,
sharing the fruit
of past and present
and the joy of tomorrow together,
Your love sealed
in the eternal knowledge and care
of the living God.

We thankfully witness
the beauty of
your binding love.

We bless you
in your vision of life together.

Starting Thoughts: A formal declaration of love in front of friends and family, a vow to have vision of life together. Marriage is a wonderful dance of two people into the future based on a commitment to love and connect.

Marriage vows to start life together. Poetry in Spoken Word

Window

I sat staring
to the blackened sky,
Window framed
dark silhouette hills,
Out of touch
safe behind glass.

Bluebells and cornfields grew
shattering the bondage,
dark forces splintered
in confused chorus chaos
and sunlight strength
warmed day colours alive.

I no longer
wanted to be safe,
instead a desire
to rush out
hug the sunrise
kiss the golden touch,
Enjoy God's daily miracles.

Change

8.30 wait,
Reluctant refugee
from warm kitchen,
Standing on the cracked asphalt
by dirty grey concrete gutter,
Bus late as usual
Watching steamy breath
envelope time
to disappear
in smog throttled air,
People in the queue
all looking the other way
beanies pulled grimly down
Collars raised to keep
frost fingers out,
Every morning I see them
regulars at the stop
on way to work,
Stranger friends
for we've never talked,
Do these people have pasts?
Ordinary folks waiting
for the ever slow transport.

.....CHANGE.....

Found in pockets
used on bus

……CHANGE….

How many chameleon
people here
with throwaway values?
Can they look
in mirrors of character
and say, "That's me."

......CHANGE......

or do they adopt
what they think others want,
Having no rock
to base their lives on.

....CHANGE.....

The bus arrives
scaring puddles onto
the pavement,
Packed with passengers
To pick up
those who will fit on.

Dad's Garden

In my dream thoughts
the traveller was out,
strolling in
the trees of the world
the forest of human life
Sensations of sunlight
smells of nature's wood,
almost spellbound in
the pictures created
in his mind.
As he walked
he came across a garden
nestled in a meadow clearing.
The garden was a
fascination of colours,
vibrancy and marvels,
the traveller pondered on how
it was so wonderful,
and he noticed the gardener.
An old man
dressed in an overcoat
with a crumpled hat,
tenderly touching
caring for each plant.
"Excuse me sir, can you tell
me the secret of your garden?"
The old gardener turned
and the traveller saw
a frail face
of wrinkles that showed
years of service, care and pain,
he noticed the friendly blue eyes
behind the glasses, nose perched.
The gardener smiled at the visitor
welcomed him and replied,
"This garden is beautiful
because....well.... God gave
the sunlight, rain and soil
and I planted a few seeds."
He then turned to
continue working
but paused, thinking,
"You can create Christ's gardens
of love. I tell you...  they are the lasting ones"
The traveller noticed
a dimming
a wearying around the gardener
and he faded, disappeared, gone forever.

And the traveller walked home
But each year he returned
finding that as time passed
the garden was growing
more beautiful,
wild but ordered
as if tended by
unseen hands,
and somehow the traveller
knew God's plan;
sensed a connection to futures.
The traveller brought some seeds
on his next journey,
scattered them
adding to garden generations
adding to dreams and desires
adding to fragrance and fun
adding to love and life.

In my dream thoughts
the gardener was Dad
The traveller was myself
Or maybe you.

Starting Thoughts: We learn a lot about ourselves and others when a family member dies. Memories of them evolve over time. Death is real but so is legacy and generational blessing.

Death of a family member - memories in poetry Spoken Word

Songbird of Meaning

I saw a songbird
dressed as a soldier
holding a melody
bayonet glinting in the sun,

A rhythm of
suspense beat moments,
blade razored to
the warm pulsating heart,

And time whistled
in a hole of death.

Written 1981 in university cafe. Not sure of the inspiration source but sometimes it just happens.

Autumn

Autumn cries
falling tears,
soft comfort
for hardening ground,
Autumn sheds
colourful clothes
laying them gently
on accepting soil,
Autumn sings
a summer lament
of wind whistles
through half naked trees,
Autumn plays with
avid admirers
jumping through leaf piles,
Autumn shivers
sensing the on-massing
change within
black winter clouds

and the last leaf falls.

Prompt

Doors

Doors are simple things
push, or pull
how many times
do I pull
instead of push?
they open
you step through.
A different world
on the other side,
Thresholds of new
but fear makes doors complex;
locks, smart card swipes
to keep the world shut out.

In the black wandering
of my life
suddenly
I found myself wondering
in front of a darkened door,
Why had it appeared here
suspended in today’s
moments midst,
light cracking through
its outside edges,

Unexpectedly
a knock from the other side,
I thought
nothing was there
nothing beyond this life,
but someone
is waiting, standing
sending rhythm beats to my heartbeats.

In confusion anger
I reacted, “Go away”
"You have no right
to be here”,
“you don’t exist!"
I closed my eyes
and tried to think
of something real,

the knock sounded again fainter…thinner
unreal.

In Memory

A memory snatch
Bouncing red hair
across the crowded room
and the past crashes back,
memories flood
surging tides
through my mind,
Can it be you Sarah?
enjoying a dance
loving the beat of life?
no responsibilities
just fun, boys and loneliness.

I knew it stalked
your heart
you dreaded losing
friends who could make
you laugh,
the crowd of noise,
club of thrills
or parties
that had to be sucked
dry of every minute,
Crowded time
that meant
less moments
in a lonely bed
unless it could be filled
by someone who showed care.

The score is displayed
in the dance music,
only the fast
furious pace
will do,
slow melodies
encrust a mirror of loneliness,
lost reflections in your heart.

Reflections in my mind.

Why am I here?

Reality Dreams

Heavy footed running
from danger situation.
My dreams
are my nightmares
are my life
for I no longer have control,

I drift from shadow to shadow
scene to scene
I hardly think.

All actions
trance-like
Slow,
A paralysed man
powerless in life's face.

Puppet string human,
Controlled,
A robotic extension,
cold metal heart
Unthinking, uncaring
a forgotten parasite
devoid of love,
I can't even
hate the way I want.
I don't care what waits
for this shell of me.

HELL! Hell?
